Fire on Oil Carrier off Incheon Coast; Two in Cardiac Arrest

A fire aboard a 7,000-ton oil product carrier off the coast of Incheon has left two crew members in critical condition. The blaze broke out on the vessel as it sailed approximately 7.4 kilometers north of Jawol Island in Ongjin County.

The Incheon Maritime Traffic Control Center received a report of the fire around 10:38 p.m. on the previous day. Of the 18 people on board, 11 were South Korean and seven were foreign nationals. Two South Korean men, one in his 20s and another in his 60s, were discovered in cardiac arrest within the engine room.

The remaining 16 crew members were rescued by Coast Guard vessels. The Coast Guard and fire department have deployed nine patrol boats and one fireboat to the scene to combat the flames. The two individuals in cardiac arrest are being transported to Jindu Port on Yeongheung Island before being taken to a hospital. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, which has not yet been contained.
