Firefighters Battle Major Blaze in Eastern England Amid Drought

Firefighters in eastern England are battling a significant wildfire that spread rapidly, threatening properties and forcing evacuations. The blaze, located in Santon Downham near the Suffolk coast, involved over 100 firefighters and 18 fire engines, who described the conditions as "difficult."

The fire erupted earlier in the day and quickly grew, posing a risk to nearby structures, including a caravan park, leading authorities to evacuate residents. Support is being provided to those displaced at a temporary shelter.

This incident is one of the largest in the rural county of Suffolk, according to Chief Fire Officer Jon Lacey. While the Sizewell B site is being monitored, fire officials do not currently expect the blaze to spread towards it, as wind direction is not anticipated to change unfavorably.
