Firefighters Contain Major Blaze at Battery Storage Facility in Canelones

Firefighters successfully contained a significant fire at a battery storage warehouse in Canelones, Uruguay, on Saturday. The blaze broke out around 8:48 a.m. at a facility located on Ruta 101, affecting approximately one-third of the stored materials. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Upon receiving the alert, fire departments from Parque del Plata and Solymar, along with a water tanker from Cuartel Centenario, responded to the scene. They encountered a "violent fire" within a hangar-like structure measuring about 40 by 60 meters, filled with battery storage racks reaching six meters high. Firefighters employed multiple fire engines and water tankers, fighting the blaze from various positions.

By 11:30 a.m., the flames were under control, and crews then focused on extinguishing remaining embers, clearing debris, and cooling hot spots. The heat caused damage to boxes and packaging, as well as partial structural damage. Two trucks and three cars belonging to the company were safely removed from the interior before being engulfed by the fire. The National Directorate of Firefighters is investigating the cause and origin of the incident.
