Firefighters overwhelmed by Madrid wildfires; 140,000 evacuated in Spain and France

Firefighters are struggling to contain a massive wildfire west of Madrid that has merged three separate blazes into one "perfect storm" of high temperatures, wind, and fire fronts. Spanish officials have warned the fire is now "beyond the capacity" of emergency services to control, leading the government to declare a national emergency.

The wildfire is at its peak and is currently beyond the capacity of firefighters to contain.

Madrid's regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, called it the "worst fire in the history of the region." Authorities have evacuated at least 30,000 people from areas near the capital, including municipalities like Chapinería, Navas del Rey, and Robledo de Chavela. The Military Emergency Unit (UME) has been deployed to protect areas near El Escorial, while officials monitor a separate large fire in Ávila province that could potentially merge with the Madrid blaze.

The fires there have forced further evacuations, including in areas near Bordeaux, prompting President Emmanuel Macron to mobilize the military for assistance.
