Fires rage in Bordeaux, threatening 8,000 years of wine culture

Wildfires are scorching the vineyards of Bordeaux, a region where wine production boasts an 8,000-year history. The blazes have forced evacuations and caused millions in damages, though the wine industry itself has so far narrowly escaped destruction.

Véronique Dausse, CEO of Château Phélan Ségur, described the situation as "a very strange and emotional time," noting the contrast between the nearby environmental catastrophe and the sunny weather at her estate. She highlighted the vulnerability of wine to weather, requiring specific conditions of temperature, dryness, and timing for harvests. The escalating climate crisis introduces new threats, including fires, smoke, extreme heat, and frost, any of which can decimate an entire year's yield.

The smoke poses a dual threat: not only does it endanger the vines themselves, but it can also seep into the grape skins, spoiling the wine's flavor. This risk has become increasingly apparent in fire-prone regions like California. Extreme cold also presents a danger, as seen when growers in Burgundy used "candle lanterns" to protect delicate shoots from frost, a desperate and labor-intensive measure.

Wine, however, is more than just an agricultural product; it is a cultural cornerstone. From ancient Georgian fermentation practices to its presence in the Bible, the Odyssey, Caravaggio's art, and Mozart's operas, wine has been integral to human life, rituals, and artistic expression. Its influence continues in modern cinema and television, underscoring its enduring cultural significance.
