Fireworks during Brussels national day celebration can go ahead despite drought

Despite drought warnings and a 'code orange' status in Flanders, the firework display planned for Brussels' national day celebration will proceed. The Brussels fire department has given the green light for the spectacle, according to spokesperson Walter Derieuw.

The dry conditions had raised doubts about whether the fireworks could take place safely. In contrast to Flanders, where fire is prohibited in nature reserves and forests, and where some areas like East Flanders have temporary firework bans, Brussels is currently under a 'green code' for drought, indicating normal conditions outside of nature reserves.

The national day festivities in the capital will culminate in the Jubelpark with a concert, a laser and drone show, and the fireworks. However, the decision comes as the Brussels fire department is set to go on strike on the same day. Unions are protesting issues such as staff shortages in the duty service, mandatory transfers without consultation, the loss of two public holidays, and the introduction of an annual evaluation system that they claim puts pressure on personnel.

Despite the strike, the fire department assures that necessary measures will be in place to ensure the continuity of urgent services for residents and visitors. This minimal service will be supported by the integrated police, the Red Cross, and other emergency response zones.
