Fireworks Mishap Injures 50 During Northern Spain Festival

An annual festival in Noain, Northern Spain, was marred by a fireworks incident that left at least 50 people injured, including three who were hospitalized with burns. The mishap occurred around midday as celebrations honoring the town's patron saint, Saint Michael, were set to begin.

Authorities reported that it appeared sparks from the initial firework ignited several other fireworks that were still on the ground. This premature ignition caused multiple fireworks to explode downwards, showering the assembled crowd in the town square with debris and shrapnel.

Three men, aged 41, 53, and 54, were taken to the hospital to be treated for significant burn injuries. An additional 47 individuals received care at a local health clinic. Their injuries primarily consisted of minor burns, ear trauma, and other superficial wounds, none of which necessitated hospital admission.

The incident cast a shadow over the start of the festivities, which are a significant cultural event for the community. While the majority of injuries were not life-threatening, the event serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with pyrotechnics, even during planned celebrations.
