First Jamsil All-Star MVP Shin Kyung-shik: 'That night on the car hood is unforgettable'

Former manager Shin Kyung-shik, now 65, vividly remembers the night he stood atop a car hood and circled the Jamsil stadium grounds. "That night is unforgettable," he said.

The historic moment occurred on July 4, 1983, during the inaugural professional baseball All-Star Game held at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul. Playing first base for the East team in an OB (now Doosan) uniform, Shin became the hero of the game, hitting the decisive run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning.

This was the second All-Star Game of that season. Shin had already impressed in the first game in Daegu four days prior, going 3-for-4 with a home run. His stellar performance in both games earned him the title of the first "Mr. All-Star" at Jamsil Stadium, surpassing Hae Tae's Kim Sung-han.

Shin, who now manages the independent Hwaseong Corryo team, recalled the moment he received the MVP award at the Hwaseong City Bibeong Sports Complex baseball field. "Senior Kim Si-jin of Samsung told me, 'Hey, you should bow deeply,' so I bowed to the crowd," he recounted.
