First Lady Oluremi Tinubu visits Abia Tuesday

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu is set to visit Abia State on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, to honor the celebrated Akwete weaving tradition. The visit, announced by the state's Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, will feature the First Lady being hosted by Governor Alex Otti and his wife, Priscilla.

The itinerary includes a significant tour of the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Society in Akwete, Ukwa East Local Government Area. There, Senator Tinubu will engage with master weavers, gaining a direct appreciation for the craftsmanship that has earned Akwete textiles global recognition.

During the visit, Senator Tinubu will interact with master weavers and witness first-hand the craftsmanship that has made Akwete textiles globally recognised.

Following the tour, a grand civic reception is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at the Akwete Central School Field. This event, co-hosted by Governor Otti, is designed to celebrate the First Lady's historic visit and highlight the vibrant cultural heritage of Akwete to the nation. Government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, and various stakeholder groups are expected to attend.

The state government has encouraged residents, particularly those in Ukwa East and surrounding areas, to offer the First Lady a warm welcome. Akwete cloth, traditionally handwoven for centuries, is a significant cultural export for Nigeria and a vital income source for many women in the region.
