First Statue of Baseball Legend Luis Aparicio Unveiled in Maracaibo, Venezuela

Maracaibo, Venezuela, has honored baseball icon Luis Aparicio by unveiling the country's first statue dedicated to the legendary player. The monument stands in the newly inaugurated Plaza Luis Aparicio Montiel, located on Avenida El Milagro in the Santa Lucía parish, where the Hall of Famer was born.

The statue is a tribute to Aparicio's immense contribution to Venezuelan sports and his unique achievement as the only Venezuelan player inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. The work is attributed to renowned sculptor Josué Benjamín Figueroa.

The unveiling ceremony saw a massive turnout from the people of Maracaibo. Representing Aparicio, his son Nelson Aparicio Llorente attended the event, alongside regional sports figures and municipal officials. The sounds of traditional Zulian gaita music filled the air as the statue was revealed.

Although unable to attend in person, Mayor Giancarlo Di Martino expressed his joy, calling the statue "the most important gift for one of the most outstanding men" from the Zulia state. He thanked everyone involved in the tribute, emphasizing the significance of such gestures of recognition. The project was inspired, in part, by a TikTok post and discussions about honoring Aparicio in his birthplace, Santa Lucía, a parish described as "extraordinary" and "beautiful."
