Fish oil spill contaminates Bavarian highway rest stop after truck's emergency brake

A busy rest stop on the A96 highway in Bavaria became heavily contaminated after an emergency braking maneuver by a truck led to the spill of 1,000 liters of fish oil. The Kreuzlinger Forst parking area, heading towards Lindau, was completely closed until late Tuesday night to facilitate extensive cleaning efforts.

The incident occurred when the 27-year-old truck driver had to brake sharply due to traffic conditions. This sudden stop caused several inadequately secured 1,000-liter containers on his trailer to shift. One container was damaged, resulting in the complete release of its contents.

Emergency services, including various fire departments, the Technical Relief Agency (THW), and the highway maintenance department, were engaged for hours to contain the oil and clean the rest stop. Officials from the responsible water authority also assessed the situation on-site. The total cost of the damage is currently unknown.

The truck driver has been charged with improper load securing. Furthermore, during a routine check of his identification, police discovered an active arrest warrant. The 27-year-old was released after paying the required fine.
