FIU data dump leaves police struggling

Fiji's police force faces significant challenges in prosecuting financial crimes due to deficiencies within the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU). Premila Kumar, a member of the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs, has voiced concerns over the delays and the subpar quality of financial intelligence provided by the FIU.

Kumar stated that the committee must address the quality of information received from the FIU. She explained that when feedback from the FIU is slow, investigators can become disengaged from cases. This lack of timely information not only diminishes investigator interest but also substantially slows down the entire legal process, potentially allowing criminals to evade justice.
