Five Dead as Severe Storms and Flooding Hit Indiana

At least five people have died in Indiana due to severe storms and widespread flooding that struck the Midwestern U.S. state this week, authorities reported. The severe weather began on Tuesday, bringing with it tornadoes and a phenomenon known as a 'derecho', a widespread, long-lived wind storm.

Among the victims were a 58-year-old woman whose car was swept away by floodwaters, an 18-year-old male who reportedly drowned after entering overflowing river waters with friends, and a four-year-old boy who died when a tree fell on his home. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with dozens of residents saved from flooded areas and hundreds displaced from their homes, according to The Indianapolis Star.

News footage depicted rivers overflowing their banks, with brown water reaching near the bottom of bridges, while rescue teams navigated the submerged areas in inflatable boats. Indiana Governor Mike Braun stated on X that he had discussed the severe storms and flooding with U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday, seeking federal aid for the affected regions.

Jonathan Whitham, Indiana's Homeland Security Director, indicated that extensive cleanup and recovery operations will be necessary following the disaster.
