Five killed and five injured after Amazon cargo plane overruns Miami runway

At least five people were killed when an Amazon cargo plane overshot a runway at Miami International Airport, struck vehicles and caught fire after landing on Sunday.

The airplane did strike a couple of vehicles.

Miami-Dade County Fire Chief Ray Jadallah said three people were taken to trauma centers in critical condition and two others received treatment at a local hospital. The aircraft also hit several vehicles, trapping victims inside them.

Firefighters carried out a complex rescue operation involving searches for the pilot and co-pilot, who were trapped in the aircraft. Jadallah did not say whether either crew member survived. Officials ended their brief statements without taking questions.

The Boeing 767, operating as Prime Air Flight 7598, arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, at 1:58 p.m. Thick smoke rose from the blue and white aircraft as fire trucks reached the scene. Fire officials said the plane caught fire in the crash, and 60 emergency vehicles and nearly 200 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel responded.

The actual cause of the incident will be determined by the FAA and the NTSB.

Firefighters used foam to extinguish the engine-compartment fire. Specialized rescue personnel freed one person trapped beneath a vehicle, while hazardous-materials teams shut down the engine and controlled a fuel leak. The NTSB sent an investigative team, and Amazon said it was working with local authorities to establish what happened. The airport closed its runways and taxiways and advised travelers to check with their airlines before going to the airport.
