Five lecturers to explore the relationship between psychoanalysis and film at Zagreb Cinema Club

Five lecturers will examine what happens “on the other side of the mirror” when psychoanalysis meets film at Zagreb Cinema Club this autumn.

The 2026 edition of Filmska čitanka will bring together theatre critic, director and actor Mihael Željko Crnčec; critic, editor and essayist Ann Fazekaš; film director David Gašo; critic and curator Bruno Sokolić; and Željka Matijašević, a theory scholar and full professor in the University of Zagreb’s Department of Comparative Literature.

The free public lectures will take place weekly in September and October at Zagreb Cinema Club, Trg žrtava fašizma 14. The first session is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m., while the final lecture will be held on Oct. 10 at the same time. Each event will end with a discussion between the speakers and the audience.

The program will explore subjects including the relationship between camp and horror films, psychoanalysis’s definitions of the normal and the pathological, and the prevailing emotional atmosphere of apocalyptic melancholy and a long, lived death. The films under discussion will include works by Zach Cregger, Coralie Fargeat, Ti West, Jacques Tati, Chantal Akerman, Ruben Östlund, Yasujirō Ozu, Elia Suleiman, Ulrich Seidl, Roy Andersson, Sergei Parajanov, Nanni Moretti, Jacques Rivette, David Cronenberg, Michelangelo Antonioni and Gregg Araki.
