Flanders Allocates Over €121,000 for Renovation of 'Privatenhuis' Near Scherpenheuvel Basilica

Flanders is providing significant funding for the preservation of a historic site, allocating €121,500 to renovate the 'Privatenhuis' adjacent to the renowned Our Lady of Scherpenheuvel Basilica. Flemish Minister for Immovable Heritage Ben Weyts announced the funding, emphasizing the importance of maintaining even the most functional aspects of the site.

The 'Privatenhuis,' a century-old structure, plays a crucial role in supporting the thousands of pilgrims who visit the Scherpenheuvel-Zichem pilgrimage site each year. The allocated funds will address critical restoration needs, including the repair of its facades, wooden exterior elements, and the roof. Importantly, the renovation will also encompass the upgrade and repair of the building's sanitary facilities, ensuring continued service for visitors.

Minister Weyts highlighted the heritage value of the building, noting that "even the toilets are heritage" in this context. This statement underscores a commitment to preserving the entirety of the pilgrimage site's infrastructure, recognizing that practical facilities are integral to the visitor experience and the site's historical significance. The project aims to ensure the longevity and usability of this important part of the basilica's complex.
