Flavio Bolsonaro blames Lula for diplomatic crisis with Argentina: 'Breaking with Buenos Aires was not inevitable'

Flavio Bolsonaro, a candidate for Brazil's top executive office, strongly condemned President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's decision to downgrade diplomatic relations with Argentina. He labeled the move as a product of an "ideologized and confrontational foreign policy" that has created crises with three regional nations in just a few months.

"I energetically repudiate the Lula government's decision to lower diplomatic relations with Argentina, a sister nation, our largest trade partner in South America and a historic friend of the Brazilian people," Bolsonaro stated in a release. He asserted that severing ties with Buenos Aires "was not inevitable" and was a "direct result" of Lula's approach.

Bolsonaro also pointed to strained relations with the United States and Paraguay, calling them "neighbors and historic allies." He lamented that "no government in recent history has managed to isolate Brazil so much in such a short time." He accused Lula of using rhetoric about "defending national dignity" as "propaganda," arguing that Brazil's sovereignty is protected by a strong economy and negotiation, not "electoral boasts and diplomatic ruptures."

He further suggested that the diplomatic downgrade is linked to the failure of the São Paulo Forum, a bloc of leftist parties in the region. "The regimes it sponsored – sustained by drug trafficking and repression – brought misery, exodus, and violence to their peoples, and now they fall one by one. Lula sees his allies crumbling and reacts by breaking with the neighbors who chose freedom," Bolsonaro claimed.

Bolsonaro warned that the "price of this irresponsibility will not be paid by those who caused it." Instead, he stated, "Brazilian farmers, manufacturers, exporters, and workers, who depend on these relationships to produce, sell, and create jobs, will pay it." He added that they "had no part in the political decisions that caused this crisis."
