Flávio Bolsonaro Calls Father's Trial a 'Farce,' Vows Amnesty if Elected

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, a prominent opposition candidate in Brazil's upcoming presidential election, has declared the trial that resulted in his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro's, conviction for coup-related charges a "great farce." He further stated that if elected, he would grant his father amnesty.

"All of this was a great farce set up to remove Jair Bolsonaro from public life," the candidate for the far-right Liberal Party (PL) asserted in a television interview. Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in prison by the Supreme Court for leading an alleged coup attempt against current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, whom he lost to in the 2022 presidential election.

Flávio Bolsonaro argued that his father was "judged by his enemies" and that the conviction was predetermined. He pointed to the charges, such as destruction of public property, despite Jair Bolsonaro being in Miami during the January 8, 2023, attacks on government buildings in Brasília. He also questioned the convictions of the rioters, stating they did not know each other and no weapons were found on them.

The senator accused the Supreme Court magistrates of acting politically, claiming they were appointed by Lula and that the trial was unjust. He positioned himself as the only candidate capable of restoring legal certainty in Brazil and compelling Supreme Court members to adhere to the constitution. He also criticized the ongoing "persecutions," including alleged targeting of journalists and the violation of source confidentiality.

Addressing accusations of attacking the electoral system, Flávio Bolsonaro denied questioning Brazil's electronic voting machines, admitting he was mistaken about claims of them being manufactured by a Venezuelan company. He reiterated his commitment to an amnesty for Jair Bolsonaro and those convicted of coup-related offenses as a means to rectify the situation.
