Flávio Bolsonaro Convention Set for Saturday Without Defined Vice President

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, a presidential hopeful for the Liberal Party (PL), is set to hold his campaign convention this Saturday in São Paulo without a confirmed vice-presidential candidate. The party faces difficulties in forming alliances with other political groups, which complicates the selection of a running mate.

To address concerns about his appeal to female voters, which have been amplified by a reported rift with Michelle Bolsonaro, the senator is actively seeking a woman to fill the vice-presidential slot. His preferred choice is Daniella Marques, former president of Caixa Econômica Federal, but this depends on securing a coalition with her party, the Republicans. Currently, such an alliance is considered unlikely.

"At this point, the complete ticket will not be announced [at the convention]. We have until August 5th," stated Senator Rogério Marinho, coordinator of Flávio Bolsonaro's pre-campaign, on Monday. This date marks the deadline for parties to officially confirm their candidates through conventions.

Marinho explained that the decision on a vice-presidential candidate hinges on the coalition negotiations the PL is currently undertaking. "We are talking with other parties; obviously, this decision will only be made when we have a clearer picture of our alliance policy. From there, we will look within the available figures in each party for those who fit the profile we deem desirable," he responded.

The "Dark Horse" case has reportedly alienated support from the União Brasil and PP parties. Bolsonaro's campaign is now attempting to mend these relationships, particularly through an alliance with the Republicans. However, the Republicanos party has indicated a preference for remaining neutral in the presidential race. Negotiations in four states could potentially alter this scenario, alongside the offer of the vice-presidency. In Espírito Santo, the PL has made progress in supporting the Republicanos' gubernatorial bid. In Minas Gerais, the PL awaits Senator Cleitinho Azevedo's decision on running for governor before finalizing an alliance. In Acre, the PL has not yet decided whether to back Governor Mailza Assis (PP) or Senator Alan Rick (Republicanos). In Mato Grosso, the parties are on opposing sides, with the PL backing Senator Wellington Fagundes against Governor Otaviano Pivetta of the Republicans. The national president of the Republicanos, Marcos Pereira, has stated the party's tendency is to remain neutral in the presidential election and is consulting state directories before a decision is expected by August 5th.
