Flavio Bolsonaro faces setback in forming election ticket, struggles with alliances

Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, is encountering significant hurdles in assembling his presidential ticket for the upcoming October election. His campaign suffered a setback when Senator Tereza Cristina, a prominent figure in Brazil's agribusiness sector and a former minister under Jair Bolsonaro, withdrew her candidacy as his running mate. Bolsonaro had previously described Cristina as his "dream acquisition" for the ticket.

Cristina's party, the Progressistas (PP), announced its neutrality for the election shortly after Flavio Bolsonaro confirmed her acceptance to the press. The party's decision appears to be a strategic calculation, with most state chapters preferring not to back a candidate who has yet to gain significant traction in opinion polls. Compounding the issue, both PP president Ciro Nogueira and Flavio Bolsonaro have been implicated in the Master scandal, which involves allegations against banker Daniel Vorcaro, further cooling their relationship.

With the deadline for party conventions on August 5 and candidate registrations closing on August 15, Bolsonaro is under considerable time pressure. He is currently engaged in negotiations with his own Liberal Party (PL) and centrist parties such as Podemos and Republicanos. The Republicanos are considering Daniella Marques, former president of the state-owned bank Caixa Econômica Federal, as a potential candidate, but this alliance also remains uncertain, with Republicanos also evaluating neutrality.

Bolsonaro's campaign has faced other challenges, including a promise to select a female vice presidential candidate to appeal to female voters who supported Lula in 2022. This promise now appears difficult to fulfill. The departure of Cristina follows a recent shake-up in his campaign team, with Flavio replacing his two marketing directors with Duda Lima, the strategist behind Jair Bolsonaro's 2022 re-election campaign. The "Bolsonaro 01" is struggling to assert control over his own campaign narrative and alliances.
