Misiones Deputies Rebel Against Longtime Leader Carlos Rovira, Denounce Forced Resignations

In a dramatic power shift, at least 16 of the 21 ruling party deputies in Argentina's Misiones province have broken ranks with Carlos Rovira, the dominant political figure for nearly 25 years. Rovira, who left the legislature in July, previously held absolute control, with the provincial assembly functioning as his "escritorio" (writing desk), approving only his agenda and blocking any initiatives he opposed.

When the unicameral legislature resumes sessions on August 13, Rovira will likely command the loyalty of only a handful of deputies. The majority are expected to align with Governor Hugo Passalacqua, whose faction has launched a new political movement called "Movimento por lo que se Viene." This internal rebellion promises to fundamentally alter the province's institutional, political, social, and business landscape.

One of the rebelling deputies, Juan José Szychowski, stated, "The era of imposition is over; now we will dialogue, we will have to agree." This marks a significant turning point, moving away from Rovira's top-down control towards a more collaborative approach in provincial governance. While some observers are confident in the changes, others remain skeptical about the depth of the internal conflict.
