Floating Garden to remain until Metro Chabacano

The "Floating Garden" in Mexico City will currently terminate at the Chabacano Metro station, with no immediate plans to extend it further south towards Tasqueña, as originally projected. Raúl Basulto, Secretary of Works and Services (Sobse), confirmed that the capital government will instead prioritize consolidating the elevated park as a "Floating Utopia," incorporating social services that have already begun operating. This phase of the project will span from Plaza Tlaxcoaque to Chabacano.

Basulto stated that the instruction from the head of government, Clara Brugada, is to strengthen the community aspect of the Floating Garden. The priority is to enhance services benefiting citizens through the Floating Utopia. Chabacano station is expected to have its connection with the park ready in the coming days. "The Floating Garden will remain at Chabacano for now; rather, what the head of government proposed is that an initial phase of the elevated park began with a provisional Utopia," Basulto explained.

Currently, the Floating Garden offers services characteristic of Utopías, such as medical attention and programs like "From the Field to the City," though these operate in temporary facilities. The next phase of the project will involve equipping these spaces with permanent infrastructure to ensure long-term operation. Basulto mentioned that work on this will commence shortly, focusing on building more stable and solid spaces for these services.

The Floating Garden, stretching from Pino Suárez to Metro Chabacano, opened on June 7 as part of the World Cup preparations. However, connections with the Metro system and pedestrian crossings were pending. The construction cost, according to authorities, was 1.91 billion pesos. As part of the Metro Chabacano station's renovation for the World Cup, Sobse also worked to reduce water leaks that historically occur during heavy rains. This included constructing a new roof covering the platforms and the connection area with the Floating Garden, along with a perimeter skirt to prevent water ingress and a drainage system.
