Homeowners struggling with minor scratches on their wooden floors can try a simple, inexpensive trick before resorting to costly repairs. Barry Darragh, director at Wooden Floors, a company specializing in wood floor sales and installation, suggests using a common walnut to effectively conceal superficial damage.

Darragh explained that walnuts contain natural oils and pigments. When rubbed onto the wood surface, these elements transfer and can help blend the scratched area with the surrounding floor. "For lighter scratches and signs of wear, they can soften the difference between the damaged part and the rest of the floor, making irregularities significantly less visible," he stated, as reported by the Daily Express.

While this method is not suitable for deep gouges, it is highly effective for minor scuffs and marks that become noticeable, especially when sunlight highlights them. The warmer months often see more wear on wooden floors due to increased furniture movement, outdoor sand and grit tracked indoors, and more daylight revealing imperfections.

To apply the trick, one should cut a walnut in half and gently rub its kernel over the scratch, following the direction of the wood grain. The natural oils should be allowed to penetrate the surface for a few minutes. Afterward, the area should be wiped with a soft cloth and lightly polished. For shallow scratches, the difference is often immediately apparent, restoring the floor's appearance without expensive interventions.
