Florida firefighters spotted something moving inside a storm drain during a routine call. It was 14 baby sea turtles, and they rescued every one before returning them to the ocean

In an extraordinary wildlife rescue, Florida firefighters saved 14 baby sea turtles from storm drains near Bonita Beach. What began as a routine response turned into a mission to save the hatchlings, who were found trapped and unable to begin their journey to the Gulf of Mexico.

Crews from the Bonita Springs Fire District, working with volunteers from Turtle Time Inc., carefully retrieved each tiny turtle by hand. The hatchlings were then transported to the shoreline and successfully released into the Gulf, allowing them to continue their natural migration.

This rescue underscores the significant challenges sea turtles face due to human activity. Coastal development and artificial lighting can disorient hatchlings, leading them away from the sea and into dangerous situations like storm drains. Experts call this "hatchling disorientation," a major threat to young sea turtles.

Sea turtles have a low survival rate, with many succumbing to predators, pollution, and habitat loss. Rescuing even a small group of hatchlings can significantly contribute to future populations, as each turtle that reaches the ocean has the potential to return and nest.
