Fluminense announces the return of veteran World Cup player Thiago Silva

Brazilian football club Fluminense has announced the homecoming of its celebrated veteran defender, Thiago Silva. The 41-year-old, considered one of the club's greatest idols, is set to wear the Rio de Janeiro team's jersey for a fourth time before retiring from professional football at the end of 2026.

"Some stories never end. The 'monster' Thiago Silva is back at Fluminense," the club declared in a social media announcement. Silva, a stalwart for the Brazilian national team in four World Cups (2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022), returns to the club where he began his professional career. He had departed last December, joining Portuguese club Porto, citing a desire to be closer to his family.

Silva's career began at Fluminense in 1998 before he embarked on a successful international journey with European clubs like AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea. He had previously returned to Fluminense in 2006 and again in 2024, but rescinded his contract in December 2025. Fluminense seized the opportunity to bring him back after Porto did not renew his contract, which expired in June.

Across his three previous stints, Thiago Silva played 212 matches for Fluminense, scoring 19 goals. His sole title with the club was the 2007 Copa do Brasil. The new contract stipulates he will play until December 2026. Silva is expected to join coach Luis Zubeldía's squad next week, though he can only be officially registered as a reinforcement on July 20 when the transfer window reopens.
