Fluminense Appoints Marcão as Head Coach, Replacing Luis Zubeldía

Brazilian club Fluminense has officially named Marco Aurélio de Oliveira, widely known as Marcão, as their head coach for the rest of the season. This decision comes after the dismissal of Argentine coach Luis Zubeldía, who was let go due to a string of unfavorable results.

Marcão, a familiar figure within the club's technical staff, has previously managed the team on an interim basis multiple times. He assumed control ten days prior to this official appointment, following Zubeldía's departure after the Copa del Mundo break. The announcement was made by club president Mattheus Montenegro at the Maracanã stadium after Fluminense secured a 2-1 victory against Remo in the Brazilian Championship.

"Fluminense will not enter the transfer market to seek another coach because we have great confidence not only in Marcão but in the entire club's technical staff. We will go forward together until the end," stated Montenegro, confirming the permanent role for the strategist. During his recent interim stints, Marcão guided Fluminense to victories in the Brazilian league against Palmeiras (3-2) and Remo (2-1). He also led the team to the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals by defeating Independiente Rivadavia in a penalty shootout.

With the recent win over Remo, Fluminense solidified its fourth-place position in the Brasileirão standings, accumulating 41 points. This places them level with third-placed Athletico Paranaense and seven points behind league leaders Palmeiras. The team's next challenge is an away match against Paranaense in Curitiba on August 30.
