Flying Eagles Reach WAFU B Semis Despite Loss to Burkina Faso

Nigeria's Flying Eagles have secured a spot in the semi-finals of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 tournament, despite suffering a 2-0 defeat against Burkina Faso in their final Group B match. The game took place on Sunday at the Lycee Scientifique de Yamoussoukro.

This loss did not prevent Nigeria from advancing, as they had already clinched their place in the knockout stage with decisive victories in their opening matches. The team defeated Ghana 4-2 and then secured a 3-0 win over Togo, demonstrating their strength in the early part of the competition.

In the match against Burkina Faso, the West African rivals took the lead in the 23rd minute with a header from a well-placed corner kick. Their advantage was doubled 13 minutes later by a spectacular free-kick from approximately 30 yards out, which flew past the Nigerian goalkeeper into the net. Burkina Faso held this two-goal lead into halftime.

Following the break, the Flying Eagles attempted to regain momentum and pushed forward in search of a goal. However, they struggled to penetrate the disciplined defense of Burkina Faso, which remained solid throughout the second half. Despite throwing players forward in an effort to score, Nigeria could not find the back of the net.

Despite the defeat, the Flying Eagles' earlier performances were sufficient to guarantee their progression. The team now shifts its focus to the semi-finals, where they will continue their campaign in the tournament, which also serves as a qualifying event for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
