FM: Egypt views preventive diplomacy as cornerstone for preserving security, stability

Egypt considers preventive diplomacy a fundamental tool for safeguarding regional security and stability, stated Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty. He emphasized that successful preventive diplomacy requires a holistic strategy encompassing support for national institutions, the promotion of economic and social development, and efforts to build peace by addressing the root causes of conflicts.

Egypt believes preventive diplomacy is one of the most important tools for maintaining security and stability.

Abdelatty articulated these views during his participation in the High-Level Conference of High Contracting Parties to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), held in Manila, Philippines. He highlighted that Egypt's engagement in the conference underscores its foreign policy commitment to strengthening ties with influential regional blocs like ASEAN and enhancing relations with Southeast Asian nations. Such engagement, he noted, facilitates expanded cooperation in political, economic, and developmental spheres, alongside improved coordination on shared regional and international concerns.

Such engagement contributes to expanding areas of political, economic and developmental cooperation, while enhancing coordination and consultations on regional and international issues of common interest, in light of ASEAN’s growing role in supporting security, stability and development.

Addressing the escalating global challenges, crises, and their interconnected dimensions, Abdelatty stressed the imperative for intensified joint international efforts. These efforts, he argued, must focus on tackling the underlying causes of conflicts and mitigating their far-reaching consequences, which increasingly impact international peace, security, economic stability, and development, particularly in developing nations. He advocated for bolstering multilateral action and reinforcing the roles of the United Nations and regional organizations, including the African Union, the League of Arab States, and ASEAN, in addressing shared challenges.

He stressed the need to strengthen joint international efforts to address the root causes of conflicts and mitigate their repercussions, which are no longer confined to the countries where they occur but increasingly affect international peace and security, economic stability and development efforts, particularly in developing countries.

The Egyptian foreign minister also underscored the importance of reforming the international financial system and increasing investments in development and infrastructure. He described these as critical elements for fostering stability and combating the drivers of conflict. Furthermore, Abdelatty highlighted the necessity of strengthening international cooperation against cross-border threats like terrorism and organized crime, advocating for respect for state sovereignty, enhanced information exchange, and cutting off terrorist financing. Promoting peacebuilding, national reconciliation, and a culture of dialogue and tolerance were also cited as vital contributions to lasting stability.

He also underscored the need to continue efforts to reform the international financial system and increase investments in development, infrastructure and basic services, describing them as key elements in promoting stability and addressing the drivers of conflict.
