FNJ Protests Journalist Kishor Shrestha's Arrest, Demands Release

The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) is staging a sit-in protest outside the Kathmandu Police Complex, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of journalist Kishor Shrestha. The FNJ has also urged all advocates of press freedom to join the demonstration.

Shrestha, who serves as the editor-in-chief of the Jan Aastha weekly, was arrested by Nepal Police on Wednesday. A police team subsequently raided and searched the offices of Jan Aastha early Thursday morning. The FNJ has strongly condemned both the arrest and the search, viewing them as infringements on press freedom.

Earlier on Wednesday night, a group of journalists, including FNJ President Nirmala Sharma, had already protested outside the Kathmandu Police Complex. The FNJ has issued a stern warning, indicating that more robust protests will follow if Shrestha is not released promptly. Police have stated that Shrestha's arrest is based on allegations of violating the Individual Privacy Act, 2018, and that an investigation is currently in progress.

Kishor Shrestha is a prominent figure in Nepali journalism, holding the position of senior vice president of the World Press Council. He is also recognized for his past roles as chairperson of the Press Council Nepal and general secretary of the FNJ. Shrestha has carved out a distinct reputation for his investigative journalism, known for his forthright and fearless reporting style.
