Footballer Héctor Bello mourns wife killed in Venezuela earthquakes: 'How do I explain to your daughter that you lost your life saving hers?'

The devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela have claimed the life of the wife of footballer Héctor Bello, who died while shielding their young daughter from the tremors. Bello announced the tragedy on Instagram, sharing a poignant message about his wife's ultimate sacrifice.

"I will tell her the story of how you saved her – how you gave your own life for our daughter, how you were a brave woman who did not abandon her even in your final moments," Bello wrote, as reported by the BBC. He expressed his profound grief and the immense difficulty of explaining to their daughter that her mother died saving her, while he was not present to intervene.

Bello confirmed that his daughter and her aunt are hospitalized and receiving care. He thanked supporters for their help during this immense period of sorrow. The Cumaná de Campeones sports organization also confirmed the woman's death, stating she was found lifeless under the rubble after the earthquake hit the country. Their daughter, however, survived the building's collapse.

The twin earthquakes near Caracas have resulted in at least 920 deaths and over 3,000 injuries, with rescue teams continuing their search for survivors. The tragedy has also impacted the sports community, with reports of other athletes losing their lives. Caracas Fútbol Club announced the death of U18 player Razan Sijaa and family members, while Club Sport San Agustín mourned the loss of Víctor Palacios. Former Miss Venezuela Giselle Reyes also shared that her mother died in La Guaira after her building collapsed.
