Foreign elections trigger diplomatic whiplash for Israel as alliances shift

The landscape of international relations surrounding Israel is experiencing dramatic shifts, with foreign election results directly dictating policy changes toward Jerusalem. This rapid fluctuation is creating significant diplomatic whiplash for Israel as governments change their stances based on who is in power.

A striking example is Colombia, where the newly inaugurated right-wing president, Abelardo de la Espriella, announced recognition of Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights and intentions to move the country's embassy to Jerusalem. This move starkly contrasts with the policies of the previous left-wing administration under Gustavo Petro, which had taken a strong anti-Israel stance, including intervening in the ICJ genocide case against Israel and severing diplomatic ties.

However, with the return of Janez Janša to power, the new right-wing government is moving to revoke these restrictions, reverse Palestinian state recognition, and relocate its embassy to Jerusalem. In response, Israel announced plans to open its first embassy in Ljubljana.
