Foreign national accused of assaulting Bali resident after suspected drunk driving dispute

A foreign national allegedly assaulted a local resident during a dispute on a road in Badung, Bali, in an incident that later circulated on social media.

The incident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 30, on Jalan Raya Canggu-Tanah Lot in Banjar Sedahan, Munggu village, Mengwi district. Badung police confirmed the alleged assault through a police spokesperson, Aiptu Ni Nyoman Ayu Inastuti.

Police said witness Sofyan Efendi, 22, and video recordings indicated that a foreign couple had been riding a motorcycle eastward. The pair were allegedly under the influence of alcohol. A local resident passing by reportedly reprimanded them, and the couple later stopped near a food stall belonging to the witness.

The couple allegedly stopped the local resident, who they believed had brushed against their motorcycle. A dispute followed and one of the foreigners allegedly struck him. Another foreign national soon stopped and tried to help the local resident. The alleged attackers then left, followed later by the resident.

Police said the identities of the victim and suspected attacker remained under investigation. Mengwi police were checking the scene and examining the incident to establish the identities involved and reconstruct what happened.
