Foreign woman charged with animal cruelty in South Korea for allegedly killing cats

A 20-year-old foreign woman is facing charges in South Korea for allegedly throwing a cat she had just adopted out of a fifth-floor apartment window. The incident occurred in Gimhae, South Gyeongsang Province. Animal rights organizations have come forward, accusing the woman of killing two other cats in the same manner and have filed additional charges against her.

The woman, identified as A from Uzbekistan, was sent to prosecutors on suspicion of violating the Animal Protection Act. Police are investigating the claims. According to reports, A confessed to the initial charge of killing one cat on July 11.

Authorities were alerted when the cat's temporary guardian, identified as B, posted about the adoption on social media. B visited A's home to finalize the adoption but decided against it due to concerns about the living environment. A then requested to keep the cat for just one day, which B agreed to. However, within hours, A allegedly threw the cat from the apartment window.

Further allegations surfaced when the animal rights group Busan Stray Cat Rescue visited A's residence to check on other cats. They reported that A admitted to having killed two more cats by throwing them from the window on July 18. Based on this information, the group filed additional charges against A on August 22.

Police are currently investigating the full extent of the allegations and the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the other cats. The woman has been sent to prosecutors without detention.
