Forensic equipment shortage delays late Racagi case

The investigation into the death of Police Constable Peniasi Racagi is facing significant delays due to a shortage of specialized forensic equipment, according to Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu. Fiji's forensic laboratory does not possess the required tools, necessitating the transfer of samples and specimens to New Zealand for analysis.

"It is out of our control and we are also waiting. We would like the system, the process to be done faster, but if we don’t have that support, then we can’t do much," Tudravu stated. He emphasized that investigations requiring advanced forensic analysis will continue to be hampered until Fiji's forensic facilities are adequately equipped. Annual budget submissions have been made to secure the necessary resources, but the current reliance on overseas laboratories creates unavoidable delays.

The situation underscores the urgent need to upgrade Fiji's forensic capabilities. The delay is particularly critical given the case's history. Racagi, 24, was found dead at the Lami foreshore in February. Two men were initially charged with murder, but those charges were later discontinued. This discontinuation occurred because key evidence, including post-mortem reports, was not submitted within the required timeframe.

Police are urging Racagi's family to remain patient, acknowledging that the current delays are beyond their control as they await results from New Zealand. The lack of essential forensic equipment directly impacts the speed and efficiency of criminal investigations, potentially jeopardizing the pursuit of justice.
