Forest fire in Germany's Sauerland burns 8 hectares; investigation launched

Firefighters in Germany's Sauerland region are battling a significant forest fire that has consumed roughly 80,000 square meters of land near Sundern. The blaze, which broke out Wednesday afternoon in steep and inaccessible terrain, is now under control but not yet extinguished.

When the fire department arrived, a large area was already in flames.

Approximately 100 emergency personnel remain on-site, working diligently to put out smoldering embers that continue to flare up. The challenging conditions and the sheer scale of the fire mean that an end to the operation is not yet in sight. At the fire's peak, around 250 emergency responders, including specialized forest fire units and members of the THW (Technical Relief Agency), were involved.

Firefighting efforts included the use of a water-dropping helicopter that drew water from the nearby Sorpesee, and large forestry equipment was employed to create firebreaks, preventing the flames from spreading. Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire and are seeking witnesses who may have observed suspicious individuals, vehicles, or activities.

This incident is part of a broader trend of wildfires in North Rhine-Westphalia, with other significant fires reported in the Arnsberg Forest near Möhnesee and in Marsberg. Interior Minister Herbert Reul urged public responsibility, stating that forest fires are typically caused by human negligence or intent, such as carelessly discarded cigarettes or improperly used grills.
