Forest Fire Near Lake Como Forces Evacuation of 50 Residents

A forest fire raging near the picturesque Lake Como in northern Italy has necessitated the evacuation of approximately 50 residents. The blaze, which ignited on the slopes of Mount Goj, spread rapidly overnight, fanned by strong winds, leading to a significant deterioration in local air quality.

Firefighting efforts are substantial, with over 100 personnel from the National Firefighter Corps intervening initially. Reinforcements have been dispatched from various regional fire departments, bringing the total number of firefighters and Civil Protection volunteers on the ground to over 130. Their primary focus is to contain the fire's advance and safeguard critical infrastructure, including a facility for people with disabilities and several telecommunications repeaters situated on the mountain's summit.

Aerial support is playing a crucial role in the containment operations. Two water-scooping Canadair aircraft and two fire-fighting helicopters are actively engaged, working in tandem with the ground crews. The evacuated families are receiving assistance from the local Red Cross committee and Civil Protection services while the efforts to control the fire continue.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of the region to wildfires, particularly during periods of dry conditions and strong winds. Authorities are working diligently to bring the situation under control and ensure the safety of the residents and the protection of vital infrastructure in the affected area.
