Forlán to Coach Uruguay U-20 Team with Several First-Division Players

Diego Forlán is set to lead Uruguay's U-20 national football team, beginning next week with a squad of 31 players. A significant number of these young talents have already gained valuable experience in the Primera División, indicating a strong pool of players for the upcoming tournaments.

Among the selected players are Luciano González and Román Clematte from Nacional, and Germán Barbas and Julio Daguer from Peñarol, all of whom have featured in top-flight matches. Other notable inclusions with first-division minutes include Valentino Würth, Yuri Oyarzo, Lautaro Navarro, and Alan Torterolo.

The U-20 team, which won the U-20 World Cup in 2023, is now focused on securing a spot in the 2027 edition. Their immediate goal is to qualify through the next Sudamericano tournament, aiming to represent Uruguay on the global stage once again.

In addition to his role with the U-20s, Forlán will also serve as the interim coach for the senior national team while a permanent replacement for Marcelo Bielsa is sought. The Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) announced Forlán's return, celebrating the homecoming of the 2010 Ballon d'Or winner. He will be assisted by former players Diego 'Ruso' Pérez and Santiago Espasandín, with Marco Mansulino as the physical trainer.
