Former Belgian Footballer Didier Segers Recounts Life of Hardship After Career

Didier Segers, a name familiar to Belgian football fans from the 1990s, has revealed the devastating turn his life took after his playing career. Once a dependable left-back for prominent clubs like Antwerp, Mechelen, and Lierse, Segers even played in the Cup Winners' Cup final at Wembley with Antwerp. After retiring from professional football, he experienced a period of relative stability, even opening a successful café.

However, this stability proved short-lived. The café business eventually failed, coinciding with the collapse of his second marriage. This marked the beginning of Segers's descent into destitution. He described a period where he had absolutely nothing: no money in the bank and no food in the refrigerator. During this time, he worked collecting trash behind a garbage truck, enduring harsh winter conditions.

His physical health deteriorated significantly. Segers developed severe arthritis in both shoulders, accompanied by inflammation that necessitated strong painkillers. He even required emergency medical attention at one point. Compounding these issues, he turned to alcohol for solace, which led to Wernicke's syndrome, a serious condition affecting the central nervous system.

The turning point came in 2017 when his daughter presented him with an ultimatum. Segers committed to sobriety, vowing to abstain from daily drinking, though he allows himself an occasional beer. He has since found a new partner, largely cleared his financial debts, and is now leading a more stable and meaningful life.
