Former Chen Chi-mai aides register for council races in Superman costumes

While Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai was answering questions in the city council, two former members of his team arrived at the election commission in Superman jackets to register their own council bids.

Chang Yi-li is running in the Zuoying-Nanzih district after serving for nearly five years as director of Kaohsiung’s Youth Affairs Bureau. Chang Yao-chung, a former aide who accompanied Chen for seven years, is standing in the Linyuan-Daliao district. Both are Democratic Progressive Party nominees and the youngest candidates in their constituencies.

The timing was deliberate. They registered on the same day Chen’s municipal team delivered its final policy report, presenting their campaigns as an effort to carry forward his emphasis on a younger administration. Their clothing featured a shield-shaped Superman design marked with the character “邁,” a reference to Chen’s name and his energetic governing style.

Chang Yi-li was described as a rare politician with a design background. During her time in office, she created Kaohsiung’s marriage-registration backdrop and was credited with helping reduce youth unemployment from the highest rate among Taiwan’s six major municipalities to the lowest. She also received a German Red Dot Design Award.

Chang Yao-chung said he wanted to bring the experience he gained over seven years back to Daliao and Linyuan, continue Chen’s fast-paced working spirit, and pursue local construction projects in the council. He also appealed to residents to give young people an opportunity.
