Former defense minister John Healey named UK's new finance minister

John Healey has been appointed as the United Kingdom's new finance minister, stepping into the role previously held by Rachel Reeves. This significant cabinet reshuffle comes shortly after Andy Burnham took office as the new Prime Minister.

Healey, who is 47 years old, previously served as the defense minister in Keir Starmer's government. He resigned from that position on June 11, reportedly due to a disagreement concerning defense expenditures. His appointment as finance minister was highly anticipated, given Burnham's recent assumption of the premiership.

Rachel Reeves, the outgoing finance minister, expressed pride in her tenure, during which she was the UK's first female finance minister. She served in the role since Labour's decisive election victory two years ago under Keir Starmer. Prime Minister Burnham has already signaled his intention to introduce measures aimed at reducing the cost of living for the population.

Several other ministerial changes have also been announced. Peter Kyle, the business minister, has departed the government. Additionally, David Lammy, who held the positions of deputy prime minister, justice minister, and former foreign secretary, has also left. Liz Kendall, the minister for research and technology, is another notable departure from the cabinet.
