Former Minister Nadiem Makarim hospitalized twice before corruption trial verdict

Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim informed the Corruption Eradication Court that he had been hospitalized twice due to reinfection shortly before the verdict hearing on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.

During the proceedings, Makarim addressed the presiding judge, Purwanto S. Abdullah, stating, "Before the trial began, I asked if the defendant was healthy?" He then reported, "Although I am ready to attend the trial today, I must report that I have had two reinfections and had to be admitted to the hospital again. But we are continuously monitoring my recovery from the surgery, and I hope it won't be too hindered, but there are complications. Just to inform you. Thank you."

The prosecution has accused Makarim of enriching himself by Rp 809.59 billion and benefiting 12 private companies through the procurement of Chromebooks and Chrome Device Management (CDM) systems within the ministry between 2019 and 2022. Prosecutors allege this procurement was driven by Makarim's business interests to increase Google's investment in PT Aplikasi Karya Anak Bangsa (AKAB), a company he founded, which later became PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia after a merger.

Prosecutors claim the Chromebook procurement resulted in state losses of Rp 2.18 trillion, comprising Rp 1.56 trillion from laptop procurement and US$44.05 million (approximately Rp 621.38 billion) from the CDM procurement. They are seeking an 18-year prison sentence, a fine of Rp 1 billion, and restitution of Rp 5.68 trillion for Makarim.
