Complications arising from a back operation in early 2024 ultimately ended his playing career. More recently, further complications in his leg have severely restricted his mobility.

"At the same time, it was so close that it went much, much worse. That it went completely wrong. So when it's tough, then one might as well be overjoyed that one gets to see one's children grow up and live for many years to come," he said.
