Former Portuguese President Rebelo de Sousa discharged from hospital after indisposition

Former Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has been discharged from the hospital after being admitted for an indisposition in the Algarve region. His office confirmed on Wednesday that he had been taken to Faro Hospital for medical attention and underwent various diagnostic tests. The former head of state, who served from 2016 to 2026, expressed his gratitude to the healthcare personnel for their work.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro reported speaking with Rebelo de Sousa by phone. Montenegro stated he found the former president to be calm, in good spirits, and recovered from the situation that led to his hospitalization. He also highlighted the quality and competence of Portugal's National Health Service.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was assisted this afternoon at the Hospital de Faro following an indisposition. The former President of the Republic underwent several complementary diagnostic tests, having been accompanied by the clinical team of the Local Health Unit of the Algarve.

Portuguese media outlet Jornal de Notícias had reported that the 77-year-old former president was conscious when emergency services transferred him to the hospital. He reportedly fainted in a restaurant. Rebelo de Sousa, who has a history of cardiac issues, underwent emergency surgery for an incarcerated hernia in December 2025. He concluded his second consecutive term as president in March 2026.
