Former Sombrerete Mayor Found Dead Among 10 Victims in Zacatecas Violence

The state of Zacatecas was shaken Saturday morning by the discovery of 10 lifeless bodies across three separate municipalities, among them Ignacio Castrejón Valdez, the former municipal president of Sombrerete. Castrejón Valdez, widely known as "Nacho Castrejón," led Sombrerete from 2016 to 2018 under the "Alianzas Rescatemos Zacatecas" coalition, formed by the PRD and PAN parties.

Professionally, Castrejón Valdez was an architect who later focused on his business ventures in construction and mining. He founded Grupo CAVI, a company providing services to the mining industry, a vital economic activity in northern Zacatecas. A tribute held for him on February 1st by Grupo CAVI lauded his vision and contributions, with attendees describing him as "generous, hardworking, cheerful, friendly, creative, persistent, witty, and deeply committed."

The municipal government of Sombrerete expressed sorrow over his death, acknowledging his "dedication, vision, and deep love for Sombrerete," stating that his legacy has left an indelible mark on the municipality's history. Castrejón Valdez was reportedly taken by an armed group before becoming one of the victims of the violent incidents that plagued Zacatecas on Saturday. His murder has prompted responses from various political and business figures, as well as residents of his hometown, given his prominent role in both public and private life.
