Former Son Heung-min teammate Romero joins Atletico Madrid, will play with Lee Kang-in

Cristian Romero, the Argentine defender who previously played alongside Son Heung-min at Tottenham Hotspur, is set to join Atletico Madrid, forming a new partnership with Lee Kang-in.

Atletico Madrid officially announced Romero's signing on the 15th (Korean time) via their club website. While the club did not disclose the contract details, local media reports suggest a five-year contract with a transfer fee of 40 million euros (approximately 65.6 billion Korean won).

The Spanish club expressed high expectations for Romero, describing him as an experienced defender with a strong physique who can quickly anticipate danger. They also noted his decisive tackling and leadership qualities on the field.

Romero spent nearly five years at Tottenham from 2021 to 2026, including his loan spell. He was a key player for the team, even taking on the captaincy after Son Heung-min's departure to LA FC for the 2024-25 season. However, last season was challenging for Romero due to inconsistent form and injuries, leading him to pursue a transfer during the summer window, which resulted in his move to Atletico Madrid.
