Former SPLC Executive Indicted in Alleged Fraud Scheme

Heidi Beirich, a former executive at the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), faces federal charges in a superseding indictment for her alleged role in a fraudulent scheme that prosecutors claim duped donors and banks. Court documents unsealed Wednesday detail accusations that the SPLC told donors it was dismantling white supremacist and extremist groups, but instead allegedly funneled payments to confidential informants within these groups.

Prosecutors contend these payments were used to fund "violent, racist and extremist activities." This indictment marks the first time an individual connected to the civil rights nonprofit has been charged in the case, which the Justice Department initially announced in April. Beirich, who previously served as the director of the SPLC's Intelligence Project, is charged with wire fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering.

The indictment further alleges that Beirich oversaw payments to an informant with whom she had a "romantic relationship." During this alleged relationship, they reportedly shared a home and two bank accounts. Between 2015 and 2021, approximately $140,000 flowed from an SPLC-operated account into their joint accounts. The indictment claims Beirich used some of these funds for personal living expenses.

Michael J. Proctor, Beirich's lawyer, vehemently denies the allegations. "This case is without merit," Proctor stated to CBS News. "We believe the charges against her and the SPLC are politically motivated, and Dr. Beirich has been targeted in this case because of the important work she has done to combat hate groups and extremists." He added that Beirich "won't be silenced or intimidated by the government's false and politicized allegations now." Beirich's arraignment is scheduled for August 19. The SPLC itself faces 11 counts of fraud and conspiracy, to which it has pleaded not guilty.
