Former Sri Lankan PM, MP Owes Millions in Unrecovered Presidential Fund Loans

Sri Lanka's Presidential Fund has failed to recover nearly 25 million rupees disbursed to a former Prime Minister and a former Member of Parliament for medical treatments. A recent report from the National Audit Office details the significant sum that remains outstanding.

The funds in question were provided during 2012 and 2014 under the premise of being recoverable. Specifically, the former MP received approximately 10.9 million rupees on April 4, 2012, while the former Prime Minister was granted over 13.7 million rupees. As of May 20, 2026, neither amount had been recouped by the Presidential Fund.

These revelations emerged during an audit conducted in accordance with Section 12(1)(c) of the National Audit Act No. 19 of 2018. The findings are included in the audit report for the Presidential Fund's 2025 annual report, shedding light on the management and recovery of public funds allocated for medical assistance.
