Former TPP Legislator Lee Chen-hsiu Announces Hsinchu Mayoral Bid, Sparking Internal Party Conflict

A surprising turn of events has emerged in the Hsinchu County mayoral race as Lee Chen-hsiu, a former legislator affiliated with the Taiwan People's Party (TPP), announced her intention to run for the position on August 26.

Lee's candidacy directly challenges the TPP's previously nominated candidate, Chiu Chen-yuan, who is also the former acting mayor of Hsinchu City. This move sets up a potential internal party conflict within the TPP for the Hsinchu mayoral seat.

Commenting on the development, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) caucus whip Chuang Jui-hsiung remarked that having two candidates from the same party vying for the same office in the same locality creates an "own goal" scenario. He suggested that this internal competition will make the election campaign more dynamic and engaging.

Chuang stated that the DPP respects the decisions of individuals and political parties to participate in elections. However, he found Lee's situation particularly noteworthy, transitioning from being a colleague within the TPP to becoming an opponent of the party's official nominee. "The Taiwan People's Party's internal affairs are their own business, and the DPP will not interfere excessively," Chuang added.
