Former vice governor to stand trial for fatal crash in Argentina's Altas Cumbres

Oscar González, a former vice governor and legislator in Córdoba, Argentina, is set to stand trial for his role in a fatal 2022 car crash on the Camino de las Altas Cumbres. The trial, scheduled to begin in the Villa Dolores Criminal and Correctional Chamber, will address charges of aggravated culpable homicide and aggravated culpable injuries, stemming from reckless driving.

The incident occurred on October 29, 2022, when González, driving a BMW X1, collided head-on with a Renault Sandero. The driver of the Sandero, 56-year-old Alejandra Bengoa, died at the scene. Her 14-year-old daughter, Marina, and her daughter's friend, Alexa, also 14, sustained severe injuries. Alexa was left paraplegic as a result of the crash.

Alexa recounted the terrifying moments of the collision, stating she "didn't see much because it was very fast. I just saw the car coming at us and nothing else." She later described waking up in the hospital to find she had lost all sensation and was later informed of her spinal cord injury. González, who was a provincial legislator at the time, was suspended following the accident.

Further complicating the case is the origin of the BMW X1 González was driving. The vehicle had been judicialized, having been seized due to theft and bearing a cloned license plate. It was loaned to the Legislature in 2019, with authorities stating that provincial law required the vehicle to continue circulating under the same conditions as when it was seized. González had previously faced a federal investigation for using the official car but was ultimately cleared of charges of "unfaithful depositary."
