Formula One may cut race distances from 2027

Formula One could shorten the maximum distance of its Grand Prix races from 305 kilometers to 290 kilometers beginning in 2027, according to foreign reports. The Monaco race, already limited to 260 kilometers because of its distinctive layout, could also be shortened.

The possible change follows criticism of the latest technical regulations. Under those rules, electric power and internal-combustion power contribute equally to a car’s total output. Drivers have criticized the resulting driving style, which requires them to constantly collect and use electrical energy.

The proposed 15-kilometer reduction would have different effects depending on the circuit. At Spa, where a lap measures 7.004 kilometers, it would amount to slightly more than two laps. Monza’s 5.793-kilometer lap and Silverstone’s 5.891-kilometer lap mean the reduction would equal roughly two and a half laps at each track.

This year’s Italian Grand Prix is scheduled for 53 laps and 306.720 kilometers, while the British Grand Prix is set for 52 laps and 306.198 kilometers. Those are the race figures that could move in the same direction at each circuit.
